St. Valentine's Day

St. Valentine's Day has roots in several different legends. One of the earliest popular symbols of the day is Cupid, the Roman god of Love, who is represented by the image of a young boy with a bow and arrow.

Three hundred years after the death of Jesus Christ, the Roman emperors still demanded that everyone believe in the Roman gods. Valentine, a Christian priest, had been thrown in prison for his teachings. On February 14,Valentine was beheaded. The night before he was executed, he wrote the jailer's daughter a farewell letter signing it, "From Your Valentine".

Another legend tells us that this same Valentine, well-loved by ail, wrote notes from his jail cell to children and friends who missed him.

February 14 was also a Roman holiday, held in honour of a goddess. Young men randomly chose the name of a young girl to escort to the festivities.

St. Valentine's Day is now a day for sweethearts. It is the day that you show your friend or loved one that you care. You can send candy to someone you think is special. Or you can send roses, the flower of love. Most people send "valentines", a greeting card named after the notes that St. Valentine wrote from jail. Valentines can be sentimental, romantic and heartfelt. They can be funny and friendly. If the sender is shy, valentines can be anonymous.

Americans of all ages love to send and receive valentines. Handmade valentines are created by cutting hearts out of coloured paper. Valentines can be heart-shaped, or have hearts, the symbol of love, on them. In elementary schools, children make valentines for their classmates and put them in a large decorated box, similar to a mailbox. On February 14, the teachers open the box and distribute the valentines to each student. After the students read their valentines, they have a small party with refreshments.

You can write a short rhyme inside the heart:

Roses are red.

Violets are blue,

Sugar is sweet,

And so are you!

Or you can buy valentines with messages in them. If you are shy, you can sign it, "Your Secret Admirer".

Christmas

The word "Christmas" is derived from the words "Christ's Mass" - the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ. But although Christmas is undoubtedly a Christian celebration, it is also true to say that it is an unusual combination of pagan and Christian festivities.

A Christmas tree stands in everybody's living room at Christmas, shining its good cheer around the room. Sitting on the very top of the tree is a silver star surrounded by tiny lights. All the branches are hung with silver bells, tinsel and sparkling lights. Around the base of the tree lie the gifts and toys wrapped up in bright colourful paper.

The Christmas tree has spread its influence around the world. In fact America adopted it before it found its way to England early in Queen Victoria's reign. Now every Christmas British people are sent a huge fir tree from Norway which stands in Trafalgar Square, in the centre of London, shining down on all the people who gather on Christmas Eve.

In pre-Christian times evergreens, trees that remain green throughout the year. were worshiped in Northern Europe as symbols of eternal life. Mistletoe, hung up as a Christmas decoration is a symbol of love and reconciliation.

Holly, a well-known Christmas decoration today, has Christian associations. In Norwegian, Swedish and Danish, holly is known as "Christ's thorns", the legend being that Christ wore a crown of holly thorns before his death. Some people have seen associations between the word "holly" and "holy".

Giving presents goes back to Roman Saturnalia when good luck gifts of fruit, pastry or gold were given to friends on New Year's Day. In Britain the traditional day to give presents until relatively recently was December 26th and not as it is today, Christmas Day. December 26th is now known as Boxing Day, for it was then that the priests of the Middle Ages opened alms boxes to give to the poor.

Not all Christian customs and traditions are of ancient origin. Although various people have claimed to have designed the first Christmas card. William Egley, an English artist, seems to have the best claim. In 1842 he designed his own card and sent it to one hundred of his friends. Today three billion are sent annually in the United States alone.

Halloween – один из древнейших праздников в мире. Существует мнение, что ему более двух тысяч лет. В нем удивительным образом переплелись языческие верования и традиции с христианскими. Корни этого праздника уходят в древние дохристианские времена. Тогда территорию современной Ирландии, Великобритании и Северной Франции населяли племена кельтов. Кельтский календарь делил год на две части – темную и светлую. В конце октября в полнолуние происходил переход от светлой части года к темной. Переход этот сопровождался традиционным ритуальным празднеством, которое называлось Самайн. По преданию, в эту ночь, с 31 октября на 1 ноября, сам бог смерти Самхэй открывает мистические ворота между летом и зимой, между прошлым и будущим, миром живых и миром мертвых. На одну ночь стирались все границы, и мир застревал в промежуточном состоянии. Кельтские суеверия гласили, что души умерших в эту ночь могут прийти к домам, в которых жили когда-то. Они могут принимать различные обличия, злые вселялись в животных, самые опасные – в котов. Желая защитить себя, своих близких и свои дома от теней мертвых, люди гасили огонь в своих очагах, а сами наряжались в звериные шкуры, пытаясь таким образом напугать и сбить с толку души мертвецов. Однако чтобы они не разозлились, на пороге дома для них оставлялось угощение. Жрецы-друиды тем временем разжигали ритуальные костры, священный огонь которых потом раздавался всем жителям селения, чтобы те именно от этого огня разожгли очаг в своем доме. Чтобы задобрить бога Самхэйя, друиды приносили ему в жертву животных.

Когда в I в. н. э. территории, которые населяли кельтские племена, были завоеваны римлянами, праздник не переслал существовать, но уже не имел такого размаха. Обращенные в христианскую веру, жители Ирландии и Британии вынуждены были отказаться от многих языческих обычаев, но воспоминания о празднике и о мистической ночи продолжали храниться в сознании народа и передаваться из поколения в поколение.

В IX веке Папа Григорий III перенес празднование христианского Дня всех святых с 13 мая на 1 ноября. Возможно, церковь хотела таким образом искоренить последние воспоминания о языческих традициях, но вышло наоборот: праздник возродился. Тогда же он приобрел современное название. Его начали именовать All Hallows Even (Вечер всех святых, канун Дня всех святых), в сокращении – Hallowe'en или Halloween.

Так Хэллоуин стал отмечаться практически повсеместно в англоязычных странах Европы. В XIX веке, когда в поисках лучшей жизни к берегам Америки хлынули волны ирландской иммиграции, праздник распространился и на территории Нового Света. Именно здесь он обрел свои новые черты, а его традиции заметно трансформировались. Например, в Ирландии знаменитые светильники в виде головы со светящимися глазами, носом и ртом изготавливали из репы, свеклы или картофеля. А в Америке их стали делать из тыквы. Так появился один из самых узнаваемых символов праздника. Кстати говоря, с этими фонариками, называемыми «светильниками Джека» связана одна фантастическая легенда о фермере Джеке, который обманул самого дьявола и, не попав ни в ад, ни в рай после смерти, так и остался блуждать по земле, пугая живых в канун Дня всех святых.
